Panic attack

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I’m leaving for Vermont in a few hours so I synced my iPhone just in case something bad happens.

The problem is, it got stuck when it tried to sync my calendars.

Checked Google, tried a bunch of fixes and workarounds but nothing worked. The sync process kept getting stuck at my calendar.

Then I realized I updated to 1.1.3 so I thought that was the problem. So I had to go through the long process of downgrading to 1.1.2 (which meant downgrading to 1.1.1, then updating to 1.1.2, among other things).

After all that, it still didn’t work. Only a few hours before my trip and my iPhone was completely bare. The downgrade wiped all the contents (including a number of NSFW pictures I took the day before…heh…heh… T^T).

Finally, I decided to update iTunes and see if that helped. After the update, OS X told me I had to restart. As all the windows were closing, a little dialog box got uncovered.

Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! It was asking me if I wanted to sync my calendar. NUUUUUU!

It got buried under all my other windows. The sync didn’t get stuck. It popped up a window asking me to confirm. If I clicked OK earlier, it would’ve synced just fine.

So I lost a whole bunch of photos for nothing :(

Now that I’m on 1.1.2, I can use Summerboard, DropCopy, and Japanese/Chinese input again, so I’m happy :) Wasn’t a total loss.

All covered up

I just found out I’ve got the privilege of designing the cover for a soon-to-be-published book. Sure beats coding for a living :)

Must be nice to be able to collect royalties :) Getting paid over and over again for something you do only once is always good news to me.

“Tonight, we dine in hell!”

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

I’ve finally taken care of the 300 unread messages in my inbox. What a way to start the week. And it’s already half over!

Actually, tonight, I’m having hot pot. Mmmm… Not exactly hell but temperature-wise, I’d say it’s pretty close :)

Playing catch up

I spent all of last week doing a course at work. It’s the equivalent of a semester-long fourth-year undergrad compiler construction course boiled down into 40 hours.

And yes, on day 4, we actually had to build a compiler. The instructor half-jokingly told us we couldn’t go home until it worked.

So this week, I came back to almost 500 unread messages in my inbox. I’ve got it down to just over 300 today.

It’s going to be a long week.

Mind and body

An affliction of the mind can manifest itself as a physical condition.

And right now, I’m a walking ball of stress.

Topping up

Friday, January 25th, 2008

I gotta say, I absolute love my Saturn dealership. Each time I take my car in, they do the work at the price they quote ahead of time, wash my car and top up all the fluids. Because of that, I’ve only had to top up my washer fluid a few times over the past two years.

This winter has been particularly nasty and the salt trucks have been doing their rounds. As luck would have it, I ran out of fluid on the highway. So I bought a bottle of -40C and tried to get it into my tank.

Popped the hood release.

Check.

Flip the secondary release lever.

Secondary release lever? Where the heck is that? My hood was barely open so I had to reach in with my fingers fumbling around for a little magic knob. For more than 10 minutes. In a lonely parking lot. In the dark. It was quite warm… the engine had been running for quite some time.

Pop!

Finally! Poured in the fluid (with some minor spillage), cleaned up, and went home.

Duck and cover

Apparently, 20″ LCD monitors are good for hiding. I’m in class right now and I can see one dude fast asleep, one chick who’s randomly surfing, checking email, rating her professors, …

Surprise, surprise, they both the chick left early during this break. 2.25 hours left to go today.

Update: The dude came back late. I don’t know why he bothered to show up at all. He came in over an hour late, slept through the afternoon and consistently came back 5 minutes late after each break (we get 4 per day). So he misses about 50% of the lecture each day.

No pictures, please

I finally realized why my workplace has a policy against photography and video recording.

It’s because we don’t have much of a dress code. If we got caught on camera, we’d cause the company so much public embarrassment :)

Over the past week, I’ve seen people wear the same puke green snow pants to work two three four five days in a row. Five days? And the same blue hoodie too!

A while ago, I saw someone wearing a short pink top and brown flood pants, revealing more midriff and ankles than I’d ever want to see.

Then there are the “Inspector Gadget” people. You know, the ones who seem like they only have one type of outfit in their wardrobe.

Because they wear it every frikken’ day.

Vroom…

You know traffic is bad when you can take shots of everything around you and not get hit. While driving. Standard.

I didn’t even bother shifting into 2nd most of the time…

One, two, three…

‘Tis done, ’tis done!

And now, we wait.
