I turned in my company laptop yesterday. I was escorted out through the main doors—an entrance I rarely go through; except when I forget my badge. In one hand was a company-branded stickies cube; in the other was a Sponge Bob lunch box—a thoughtful gift from my team—filled with the few remaining items on my desk; and parting words.

It was a painful goodbye. I will truly miss everyone I’m leaving behind—except Ankit. Just kidding, Ankit. I wonder if you’ll ever find this :)

The past two years passed very quickly. I learned a lot during that time; about myself, people, business, business people, process, politics, …

I’ve got a gaping space on my desk where my company laptop usually sits. You know–for all those times I have to take work home. When I got home yesterday, I still habitually kept it clear; I quickly forgot that laptop had already been handed off to someone else.

That was my first resignation; not a bad way to go considering my last company was taken over and I got laid off from the one before that because it too was going under.

I gave up one office, but soon I’ll have two. I’ll be starting my Masters at UofT next week, as well as a cancer R&D position in one of their cellular biology labs (no, R&D doesn’t mean I’m also developing cancer). My last foray into the life sciences had me analyzing whole plant and invertebrate genomes. This time, I’ll be working with humans; in particular, cancer within humans. Not in vivo or in situ, of course. My domain is in silico.
